The Peace

Preparatory Silence for Worship

Introit - O Holy Jesus
Words: a prayer of St Richard of Chichester
Music: L J White

O holy Jesus, Most merciful Redeemer, friend and brother,
May I know Thee more clearly, Love Thee more dearly,
And follow Thee more nearly. Amen.

Call to Worship
Leader: Jesus calls us
To speak and share
to listening and welcoming;
All: Jesus calls us to witness.

Leader: Jesus calls us
to nurture and heal,
to service and solidarity;
All: Jesus calls us to love.

Leader: Jesus calls us
to praise and pray,
to singing and silence;
All: Jesus calls us to worship.

Hymn 290 The Race Who Long in Darkness Pined
(t. St Magnus - Nottingham) Paraphrase of Isaiah 9:2-7

Prayer of Approach, Praise, Confession and The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily
bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not
into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the
power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Hymn 510 Jesus Calls Us Here to Meet Him
(t. Lewis Folk Melody)

Reading Isaiah 9:1 - 4
Read by Peter Brand (OT p647)

The Righteous Reign of the Coming King
9 But there will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In the former
time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of
Naphtali, but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea, the
land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.

2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who
lived in a land of deep darkness - on them light has shined. 3 You have
multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as
with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. 4 For the
yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their
oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.

Anthem I to the hills
Words: Psalm 121
Music: Tom Cunningham (born 1947)

I to the hills will lift mine eyes, from whence cometh my help. My help
cometh from the Lord which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy
foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold he that
keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is thy keeper: the
Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day,
nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall
preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in
from this time forth and even for evermore.

Reading Matthew 4:12 - 14, 17 - 23
Read by Peter Brand (NT p3)

Jesus Begins His Ministry in Galilee 12 Now when Jesus heard that John
had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. 13 He left Nazareth and made
his home in Capernaum by the lake, in the territory of Zebulun and
Naphtali, 14 so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah
might be fulfilled… 17 From that time Jesus began to proclaim, ‘Repent, for
the kingdom of heaven has come near.’

Jesus Calls the First Disciples 18 As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw
two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a
net into the lake—for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, ‘Follow
me, and I will make you fish for people.’ 20 Immediately they left their nets
and followed him. 21 As he went from there, he saw two other brothers,
James, son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father
Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left
the boat and their father and followed him.

Jesus Ministers to Crowds of People 23 Jesus went throughout Galilee,
teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the
kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness among the people.

Reader: For the Word of God revealed through Scripture.

ALL: Thanks be to God

Hymn 533 Will You Come and Follow Me?

Hymn 509 Jesus Calls Us O’er the Tumult
(t. St Andrew)

Prayer for Others

Hymn 682 Go in Grace and Make Disciples
(t. Abbot’s Leigh)

Closing Responses - from words of Richard Halverson
Leader: We go nowhere by accident.
All: Wherever we go, God is sending us.
Leader: Wherever we are, God has put us there.
All: God has a purpose in our being right where we are.

Leader: Christ, who is within us by the power of his Spirit,
All: wants to act through each one of us.
Leader: Believe this and be called in his grace, his love, his power.
All: In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Benediction

Threefold Amen

THIS MORNING’S CHOIR MUSIC Richard of Chichester was Chancellor of
Oxford University in the early 13th century. He was canonised in 1262. This
famous prayer is said to have been uttered on his deathbed in 1253. The
simply setting of 1947 by an Anglo –Catholic schoolmaster is a mellifluous
melody, repeated with a soprano descant.

Tom Cunningham, who lives in the Grange, is a highly regarded and widely
performed composer with a considerable output of choral and other music.
He was for many years Musical Director of the Brussels Choral Society,
before returning to Edinburgh some twenty years ago. This setting of
Psalm 121, is an excellent example of his skill in crafting an attractive and
inventive melodic line with subtle variations of direction and harmony to
suit the text and maintain our interest and avoid the predictable.
