The Parish of Newington Trinity is now vacant following the departure of the Revd Dr Sandy Forsyth to the position of national Director of Studies for the Church of Scotland.
The congregation of Newington Trinity church currently has two vacancies. One is for the post of parish minister. The other is for a pioneer minister post.
The union of Craigmillar Park, Mayfield Salisbury, Priestfield congregations took place on 1 January 2025. Prior to that date, the three congregations worked closely both to align
activities and to plan for the future of the new congregation. In 2024 the congregations increasingly worshipped together primarily at what is now the Newington Trinity – Mayfield sanctuary which has been agreed as the primary worship centre. A range of activities at the Newington Trinity-Priestfield centre continue and the location is envisaged as a base for pioneer work.
As required by Presbytery we will commence the recruitment of the Parish Minister vacancy before the Pioneer Minister.

Electing a Nominating Committee
The process
On Sunday 7th December 2025, we hope to hold the election for our Nominating Committee. The Committee will number 13 persons. Members of the congregation and registered adherents will be able to vote if they are present at the meeting. If you are not sure whether your name is on the Roll, please check with the Roll Keeper; Session Clerks or Church office within the next couple of weeks.
Any member of the congregation can be elected to the nominating committee with the following exceptions
1- a minister (including a retired minister) of the Church of Scotland,
2- a member of the diaconate of the Church of Scotland,
3- an employee of the vacant charge,
4- an employee of FAPLT who works in the vacant charge, or
5- the spouse or civil partner, of an outgoing minister, or of any Team Minister, or of any former minister of the charge.
Each nomination should be proposed and seconded. The nominee then has to agree that they are willing to serve. You can nominate someone who is not present at the meeting, but you will need to bring to the meeting their written agreement to the nomination.
If there are more than 13 nominations, there then follows quite a complex voting procedure which will be explained at the time, if it is necessary.
Once we have the committee complete, the names will be announced, the congregation will be free to leave but the committee members will meet immediately, for a short period, with the Interim Moderator.
The Nominees
Prayerfully look for:
People with the best interests of the whole congregation at heart, rather than advocates for a particular group
People who will have the time and energy to commit fully to the process.
People who will prayerfully and respectfully listen to the views of others. One or two members of the committee who are determined to ‘get their own way’ can delay or even disrupt the entire search process.
Try to ensure that when the Nominating Committee is complete, you have a good representation of the whole congregation in all its splendid variety.
How can the congregation support the Nominating Committee
Remember the Committee and its work in prayer, day by day, week by week.
Try to relieve the members of any extra commitments.
Try not to ask the individual members for information which they are not able to disclose.
Try not to pressurise the committee in terms of time scale. It is better for the committee to take an extra month or two than to rush the search and decisions and make a mistake.
