Prayer of Approach, Praise and Confession & Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
The Collect for Trinity Sunday – said by all
Almighty and eternal God, you have revealed yourself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and live and reign in the perfect unity of love: hold us firm in this faith, that we may know you in all your ways and evermore rejoice in your eternal glory, who are three Persons yet one God, now and for ever.
Old Testament Isaiah 6:1-8 read by Sheena McDonald
A Vision of God in the Temple
6 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. 2 Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. 3 And one called to another and said:
‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory.’
4 The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. 5 And I said: ‘Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!’
6 Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. 7 The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: ‘Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.’ 8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I; send me!’
Anthem Hymn to the Trinity Sung by the Chamber Group
Words: Reginald Heber (1783 to 1826)
Music: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840 to 1893)
New Testament Romans 8:12-17 read by Sheena McDonald
12 So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13 for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.
15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

All: But the Lord has forgiven us
Leader: Whom shall God now send?
All: Here are we, Lord, let us hear your voice calling us

Organ Voluntary - Fugue in Eb, BWV 552, J. S. Bach
TODAY’S INTROIT AND ANTHEM MUSIC
The introit is the “Zum Sanctus” or “Heilig” movement from the second German Mass by Schubert. Quietly reflective, it is deceptively simple and four square. The calm opening section has the same text for both verses, the harmonies of the second section each time being a shade more unsettled.
The Cherubic Hymn, “Izhe Heruvimi,” is a central part of the Orthodox Liturgy for Eucharist being sung during the Great Entrance. Tchaikovsky was the first composer to create choral compositions from parts of the Liturgy, beginning with his setting of the “Liturgy of St John Chrysostom.” He later produced a set of nine sacred pieces with no less than three further settings of the Cherubic Hymn of which today’s anthem in F major, is the first. The text is not a translation of the Orthodox Russian but uses Reginald Heber’s fine hymn. The first three verses start very quietly and increase in intensity. There are straight repeats until the second half of the third verse which then leads into a fourth with increased tempo and dynamic, bringing us to vigorous “alleluias” to finish.
